The Lady King Boycott was a marketing campaign launched in 2022 to protest the discharge of the movie “The Lady King.” The boycott was organized by a bunch of activists who argued that the movie glorified the Kingdom of Dahomey, a robust West African state that engaged within the slave commerce.
The activists argued that the movie’s portrayal of the Dahomey Amazons, an all-female navy unit, was traditionally inaccurate and sanitized the dominion’s position within the slave commerce. Additionally they criticized the movie for its casting of Viola Davis, a dark-skinned actress, within the lead position, arguing that it perpetuated the concept solely light-skinned black girls are worthy of being celebrated.
